Ms. Niece, a 2013 graduate of Jenkins Independent, was awarded the Larry M. Greathouse Scholarship and plans to attend Alice Lloyd College in the fall.

About the Award:

We are pleased to announce the Larry M. Greathouse Memorial Scholarship in alliance with the Kentucky Coal County Coalition. The Kentucky Coal County Coalition awarded the first scholarship in 2012.  The scholarship is awarded to a high school senior and resident of the same county as the KCCC Chairman. The 2013 Chairman of the Coal Coalition is Letcher County Judge/Executive Jim Ward. 

The scholarship is for $1,000 per year for four years, for a total of $4,000. Applicants for the Larry M. Greathouse/KCCC Scholarship must be planning to attend a college or university, two- year technical college or community college. 

Preference shall be given to a student who has an immediate guardian who has been involved in a work related injury in the coal mining industry resulting in a permanent partial or permanent total disability award from the Kentucky Department of Workers Claims and/or the immediate guardian is employed in the coal mining industry.

Larry M. Greathouse, the late father of Joe Greathouse, served as Commissioner of the Department of Workers Claims and was a member of the Kentucky Workers Compensation Board.  This award, through the Kentucky Coal County Coalition, is in memory of the late Larry M. Greathouse.
